The Dopamine of the BBM Ping (And Other Things Modern Tech Ruined)

There is a very specific generation of us whose thumbs still possess the muscle memory of the tiny physical QWERTY keyboard that was the Blackberry. (A Canadian company, purr)

If you lived through the late 2000s and early 2010s, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It was a cultural moment in time!! This is not an exaggeration.

The cute qwerty keyboard, the tiny red light for notifications and the dopamine hit of a new BBM message….. Welcome to the golden age of the BlackBerry.

The Anatomy of The Low-Res Aesthetic

Before front-facing “selfie cameras” and AI-driven filters existed, capturing your outfit, or your mood required genuine strategy, spatial geometry, and a decent mirror.

Coincidentally, I also had a shopping problem, so I spent a lot of time shopping and taking mirror pics on my spare time.

The BlackBerry era hit differently because the technology felt intentional.

We weren’t scrolling passively; we were actively managing our own communication networks. 2 things I always think about that I haven’t seen in modern communications:

    • The Dopamine of the BBM Ping: That distinct, sharp ping sound triggered a psychological rush of focus that modern apps just can’t replicate. I can still hear it in my head now, tbh.
    • “What’s your PIN?” Exchanging that alphanumeric code felt like entering an exclusive VIP network. I hated it too, until I got a Blackberry.

The Blackberry era is my favourite phone era

I often wonder if we’ll ever have an era like that again?

Our social networks were smaller, tighter…. real. Photos were grainy, unedited, and highly intentional because you had to work for them. We didn’t worry about the perfect lighting or even how many people would see the photos. Ah, those were the days.

What about you? Did you carry a Bold or a Curve? What was your go-to BBM status strategy? Drop your favourite BlackBerry memories in the comments below!
